Muitas vezes é a limitação
que nos obriga a inventar
uma forma
e uma linguagem própria
de dizer e de ver.

Talvez por isso,
quando o caminho se torna incerto,
o gesto mais seguro
seja regressar à origem.

We are a delicate beginning.

We always begin through trial and error:
looking, gesture, word.

Often it is limitation that compels us
to invent a form
and a language of our own
for saying and for seeing.

Perhaps for that reason,
when the path becomes uncertain,

Esse simulacro de vida que cabe inteiro na exausta cautela de não sairmos do mesmo lugar, quando na imobilidade tentamos correr de costas, atrás de um tempo que não é nosso, tomado por empréstimo, na disputa com o infatigável zurzir do relógio. Impasse. Em desbalanço, deixámo-nos cair para dentro de nós, vôo de recurso, sem acrobacia que nos distraia do tédio e nos redima do medo.

This simulacrum of life that fits entirely within the exhausted caution of not leaving the same place, when in immobility we try to run backwards, chasing a time that is not ours, borrowed, in competition with the tireless ticking of the clock. Impasse. Off balance, we let ourselves fall into ourselves, a flight of recourse, without acrobatics to distract us from boredom and redeem us from fear.

Daquele novelo pendiam duas pontas.

O princípio, no topo do rolo.
Um pedaço de lã, desgrenhado, já meio farrusco de tanta mão passar por ele. Ele era o início da nova peça.
Da camisola que aqueceria o tronco de alguém.
Do cachecol que cobriria um pescoço esguio. Daqueles que só apetece beijar. Tanta vez se pegou naquele fio.
Tanta vez o deixaram naquele topo: ao sol. À mercê de tantas mãos que lhe tocaram mas desistiram de tricotar.

O fim, a saltar das entranhas do novelo.
Aquele pedaço de lã que se atreveu a atravessar um labirinto em busca de luz. Está novo. Lisinho. Tão liso que parece penteado.
Espera impaciente pelo seu momento.

Sem o princípio, o fim de nada vale.

Não há tronco para aquecer.
Não há pescoço para beijar.

É só um novelo. Com duas pontas.
Inúteis.

Two ends hung from that ball of wool.

The beginning, at the top of the ball.
A piece of wool, frayed, already a little matted from so many hands passing over it. It was the start of a new piece.
Of the jumper that would warm someone’s torso.
Of the scarf that would wrap around a slender neck. The kind you just want to kiss. So many times that thread was picked up.
So many times it was left at the top: in the sun. At the mercy of so many hands that touched it but gave up on knitting.

The end, springing from the depths of the ball.
That piece of wool that dared to traverse a labyrinth in search of light. It is new. Smooth. So smooth it looks as if it has been combed.
It waits impatiently for its moment.

Without a beginning, the end is worthless.

There is no torso to warm.
There is no neck to kiss.

It is just a ball of wool. With two ends.
Useless.

Não precisas de substituir o teu lápis de cor preta que me emprestavas para pintar as madrugadas. Estou a usar o cinza e o azul misturado com uma pitada de branco. Já experimentei hoje. Está a ficar bonito e o resto do preto ainda dá para o risco dos meus olhos.
Mas podes deixar o lençol negro, o de seda ondulada a mar. Para encher de ar, como se fora o peito de uma pomba orgulhosa, enfunada, a fazer-se velas de barco salpicadas de sol. À conta do teu lápis amarelo, este sim a precisar de substituição. Não vá faltar-te na primavera. De caminho, compra um saco de laranjas para desenhar o pôr-do-sol. Olha que têm de ser das gordas. Traz o pacote com as tuas estrelas mais brilhantes. E a lua? Pensa no que há-de ser para fazer a lua. Arruma o guarda-chuva e põe o regador a jeito.
Só falta uma coisa: retira o meu coração da barrela.

You don’t need to replace the black crayon you used to lend me to paint the early mornings. I’m using gray and blue mixed with a touch of white. I tried it today. It’s turning out beautifully, and there’s still enough black left for my eyeliner.
But you can leave the black sheet, the one made of silk rippling like the sea. To fill with air, as if it were the breast of a proud, puffed-up dove, turning itself into sails of a boat speckled with sunlight. As for your yellow pencil, that one really does need replacing. Don’t let it run out on you in the spring. On your way, buy a bag of oranges to draw the sunset. Make sure they’re the plump ones. Bring the package with your brightest stars. And the moon? Think about what it will take to make the moon. Put away the umbrella and have the watering can ready.
Only one thing is missing: take my heart out of the barrel.
